A young mother, estranged from her family, living on the streets of Wheeling, West Virginia, while suffering from schizophrenia. The nearby medical center, dealing with cases like her, was shuttered over community protests.
When discharged, Clarice was in active psychosis, Her tent was near the center of the encampment in the woods beside the shuttered hospital.
A neighbor known as Ghost found her body, she had been dead for three days. Ghost suffered the same fate 3 months later.
In the isolation enforced by lockdown, overdose deaths nearly doubled in the area.
Slag heap retraces her overdose: numbing pain (Zonked), the surge of pleasure (Exhale), an adverse reaction (Slag heap), falling (Tumble) and death (The soothing).
